A Deputy Minister of Information, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, has advised President Mills to resist the temptation to prove that he is his own man and that he is not being controlled by former president Rawlings.
He argued that attempting to prove his detractors - who accuse him of being succeptible to manipulation by Mr Rawlings - wrong was counter produictive.
He was speaking on Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana Programme Tuesday in reaction to some concerns raised by the founder of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the president had turned deaf ears to wise counsel.
According to Mr Okudjeto, President Mills appeared to be frantically trying to prove to his opponents that he is his own man and that he can steer the affairs of his government without any guidance from the former president.
He said that in the run up to the 2008 general elections, one major campaign tool of the president's opponents then was that a 'vote for Mills was a vote for Rawlings' and that Mr Rawlings was going to 'run the show' if then candidate Mills won the elections.
This, according to Mr Ablakwa appears to be a reason dent for the president to attempt to distance himself from the former president by trying to “do away with that perception.”
Mr Okudjeto stressed that the Rawlingses were concerned about the success of the party and were not going to quit, contrary to media reports to that effect.
“I think they are just looking for the vibrancy of the party, a party that will always beat the NPP in the general elections,” he said, adding that the move by the ex-first lady to contest the seat of the Vice Chairmanship showed the Rawlingses were getting more interested in the party.

If given the chance, Rawlings would want to dictate to Egya Ata as commander- in -chief of the NDC.
