The General Manager of Newspapers, Graphic Communications Group Ltd., Mr. Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh has highly commended Metro TV for its high sense of duty as far as sports coverage is concerned.
At the International Day of the Sports Journalist lecture in Accra yesterday, Mr. Ayeboafoh praised the private TV station for making sure that Ghanaians are not denied Black Stars' matches, regardless of the venue.
“I was disappointed when I tuned into a TV station for the Ghana-Mali World Cu qualifier only to see Nigeria and Kenya play,” said Mr. Ayeboafoh.
The former editor of Graphic noted: “Thank God for Metro, they make sure Ghanaians are not denied Black Stars' matches, and just yesterday, they made sure Ghanaians watched the President's Cup live, surprisingly, another local TV station was showing the Brazil-USA Confederation Final.”
Speaking on “The pitfalls in journalism and how to avoid them,” he charged sports journalists to esteem punctuality, saying “When you are not there when the event happens, the story is lost.”
He condemned the total dependence on the internet, journalist aligning themselves with some clubs as PROs. Mr. Ayeboafoh admonished sports journalists to be versatile in the discharge of their duties as well as esteem the ethics of the profession. Former Deputy Sports Minister, Mr. Joe Aggrey, who touched on “The state of sports journalism in Ghana today,” advised sports journalists to conduct themselves professionally.
He blamed journalists for over concentrating on soccer to the total neglect of the other disciplines, and harassing program organizers for money 'Soli'.
Mr. Aggrey, who sounded forthright, advised journalists to educate themselves on and off the field.
The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) arranged the program, which day is set aside by the Association for International Press for Sports (AIPS), to highlight the role of the sports journalists in the world.
Also present at the lecture were the Ag. Chief Executive of National Sports Council (NSC), Mr. Worlanyo Agrah and the President of SWAG, Mr. Ackah Anthony.
