Ghana wins silver…At ICC U-19 Africa/ World Cup qualifying series

By Kofi Owusu Aduonum - Ghanaian Chronicle

Ghana finished as runners up at the awards night of the U-19 ICC Africa affiliates World Cup qualifying series in Maputo, Mozambique last Wednesday evening.

Sierra Leone was crowned champions with net run rates of 4.81 after four successive wins with 9 points and Ghana at a net run rate of 3.72 with 9 points.

Swaziland placed third with a net run rate of -0.34, host Mozambique occupied the fourth place with -0.80, Rwanda came fifth with -0.12 net run rate score and much struggling Gambian side picked the sixth position with a net run rate of -1.21.

This sends the sierra Leonean national cricket team through to the next phase of the World Cup qualifiers in the associate division of cricket in the region to be staged in Lusaka, Zambia.

Individual players will then be selected based on their performance to be part of the Africa XI side to play in the world cup slated later in the year for Bombay, India.

Per the status of the Africa Cricket Association, two countries that excel in the U- 19 affiliate division will progress to the associate stage but due to the sudden below par performance of Kenya who were drawn a step back had this status altered.

Kenya has however stalled Ghana's chances of sailing through to play in the World Cup qualifying playoff in Lusaka, Zambia.

Captain Obed Harvey and bowlers Isaac Aboagye and Festus Apedo won man of the match trophy's in their games against Rwanda, Swaziland, Gambia and Mozambique respectively.

There is still prospect for the Ghana under -19 team due to her sterling performance at the tournament should the Africa cricket association executives meet to access the further technicalities to include the nation.

We are going to petition the Africa cricket association to produce the formula for calculating net run rate because per our technical teams analysis Ghana's net rate surpasses that of Sierra Leone how then should they be declared champions, executive member of the Ghana cricket association, Minesh Dipa has said in an interview.

The Ghanaian team has arrived in Accra on Saturday.
