Foreign Coach For Ghana Rugby

An expatriate rugby coach is due to take over the Ghana rugby team from June to prepare the national team for the upcoming Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) Development Tournament in Accra.

The coach is due in Ghana on June 1 on the sponsorship of the International Rugby Board under its development programme to assist growing rugby nations to improve in time to compete favourably with their counterparts elsewhere.

Ghana will host the six-nation tournament between June 22 and 29 this year at the University of Ghana, Legon, rugby pitch.

Niger, Chad, Togo, Burkina Faso and Mali will join Ghana at the event which will coincide with the CAR Executive meeting in Accra.

Chairperson of the Ghana Rugby Association, Gifty Annan-Myers, is hopeful that the arrival of the expatriate coach would improve Ghana's game in time for the tournament.

Ahead of the tournament, the Ghana Rugby Association is holding a trial programme at the Legon rugby pitch on Saturday to select players towards the tournament.

The selection exercise will be held under the supervision of a French coach, Mr Thideau, and Amuzu Salim, a Ghanaian in charge of junior players, according to the GRA chairperson.

Ms Annan-Myers, who is also in charge of women's rugby for CAR, said the selection team would be guided by the discipline of players in adhering to time, and urged all players to register for the initial selection exercise before 9 a.m. on Saturday.
