Bechem United president Kingsley Owusu Achau has questioned the appeal of the Ghana Premier League, admitting he would prefer watching a high-profile European fixture such as El Clasico to a domestic match if both were being played at the same time.

Owusu Achau believes the local top flight has struggled to attract supporters, pointing to a lack of excitement and concerns over match scheduling as some of the factors undermining its popularity.

Speaking in an interview with Hot FM, the Bechem United president openly expressed his preference for European football over the domestic competition.

“I would rather watch El Clasico than a local match when they are playing at the same time; the local league is not attractive,” he said.

His comments highlight the ongoing concerns surrounding the Ghana Premier League's ability to compete for the attention of football fans, with stakeholders continuing to explore ways to improve the competition's appeal and increase attendance at match venues.

The remarks come as clubs prepare for Matchday 10 of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League, with fixtures scheduled across the country this weekend following the conclusion of the ninth round of matches.

Bechem United will host FC Samartex at the Nana Gyeabour Park, where Owusu Achau's side will be hoping to secure a positive result in front of their home supporters.
