The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North and Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, has advised journalists to be cautious about what they say on air.
He said radio presenters, in particular, often do not know who is listening and would be more careful with their words if they did.
“At the time you are on air, you do not know who is listening to you. Even the President of the country could be listening. If what you are discussing is impactful to society, the President could easily recognise you whenever your name is mentioned, simply because of what you discussed on air,” he said in an interview.
“When you are on air, do not think it is only your friends who are listening and that you can say anything you want. That is the mistake many radio presenters make,” he added.
He urged radio presenters to avoid such behaviour and adhere to the ethics of their profession.
“You will hear a presenter on radio discussing issues they have discussed at their base. That is not professional. Unless the topic is impactful to society, it is very wrong to discuss it on air,” he cautioned.
The Tamale North MP also urged media personnel to uphold journalistic ethics.
“You must always make sure you leave a certain image or impression, so that in the future, even if your children hear or read anything about you, they will not be disappointed but rather proud of you. We are in a technological world now, and everything you do today will stay on the internet forever,” he noted.
