Mathys Tel struck a late clincher as Tottenham Hotspur claimed a 2-0 win over 10-man Chelsea to secure only a second league victory at Stamford Bridge since 1990.
The visitors bossed the majority of the first half, and should have gone ahead just shy of the half-hour mark, but Omar Marmoush shot straight at young goalkeeper Mike Penders, who was making his full league debut for the hosts.
Chelsea were missing the presence of leading goalscorer, Joao Pedro, through injury, but did go close when Cole Palmer’s curling effort was tipped to safety by Antonin Kinsky.
Spurs were dealt a blow early in the second period when James Maddison, who had started only his second match in 18 months, was forced off through injury. However, it was The Lilywhites who broke the deadlock on 77 minutes when Penders punched a left-wing corner into his own net.
Xabi Alonso’s men fell apart from there, with Palmer receiving his marching orders following a second yellow card just three minutes later.
Roberto De Zerbi's side then put the icing on the cake three minutes from time when Tel capped a famous derby triumph for the visitors with a superb solo goal.
The result sees Spurs snare a second straight win, and move up to 12th place, with a first success at Stamford Bridge since 2018. Chelsea are five points better off and remain fourth.
Next up, The Blues visit Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday prior to hosting Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday. Spurs are at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.
