Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Technical Director Francis Oti Akenteng says local coaches are capable of managing the Black Stars and should be given greater consideration for the national team job.

His comments follow the appointment of Swedish trainer Kim Lars Björkegren as interim coach of the Black Stars while the search for a substantive head coach continues.

Björkegren will be assisted by Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, with former Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda serving as goalkeepers' coach for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Somalia next month.

The decision by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to appoint an interim technical team without a Ghanaian head coach has attracted criticism from sections of the public, with concerns raised about the treatment of local coaches.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Oti Akenteng said the decision suggested that Ghanaian coaches were not being given the respect they deserved.

"There are local coaches who are capable of coaching the Black Stars," he said.

"If they are always overlooked, that is a sign of disrespect, and if the local coaches are not respected, they will not have an interest in coaching," Oti Akenteng added.

His remarks have renewed calls for the football authorities to give qualified Ghanaian coaches opportunities to lead the senior national team, particularly during periods of transition.

The search for a substantive coach follows the departure of Carlos Queiroz, who left his position after Ghana made a poor start to their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia in their opening Group C matches, leaving them bottom of the standings without a point and under pressure to revive their qualification hopes.

Ghana are scheduled to face Somalia in a double-header next month as they seek to get their campaign back on track.

The GFA and the Sports Ministry are expected to announce a substantive head coach in November as efforts continue to find a permanent successor to Queiroz.
