Former Ghana international Ntow Gyan has alleged that influential figures within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) interfere in Black Stars squad selection, limiting coaches’ authority to make independent decisions.
The former Asante Kotoko midfielder made the claims in an interview on Asempa FM, expressing concern about the extent of control coaches have over player selection for the senior national team.
Gyan suggested that some powerful figures have preferred players they want included in the squad, potentially undermining coaches’ ability to select players based on form and tactical considerations.
His comments come amid recurring concerns about alleged interference in player selection across Ghana’s national teams and calls for coaches to be given greater autonomy.
The former midfielder also called for increased investment in grassroots football, arguing that Ghana must strengthen its domestic talent development system rather than rely heavily on players based abroad.
He believes establishing a clear pathway from grassroots football through the domestic leagues to the Black Stars would help identify and nurture players capable of representing the country at the highest level.
Gyan further stressed the need to improve local football and create an environment in which coaches can develop competitive teams without undue interference.
Meanwhile, the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation are searching for a permanent Black Stars head coach following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.
Queiroz left the role after Ghana opened their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with consecutive defeats against Ivory Coast and The Gambia, leaving the team bottom of Group C without a point.
Kim Lars Björkegren, Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko have been confirmed as part of the interim technical team for Ghana’s November double-header against Somalia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The matches present the Black Stars with an opportunity to revive their qualifying campaign as they seek to return to the AFCON tournament after missing the 2025 edition in Morocco.
The search for a permanent head coach continues as Ghana look to address their recent struggles and rebuild the team ahead of their next qualifying fixtures.
