The Ghana Sports Fund has assured the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) and the national boxing team, the Black Bombers, of support to improve their preparations and performances in future competitions.

Dr David Kofi Mawuvi Wuaku, Administrator and Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Sports Fund, gave the assurance during a meeting with officials of the GBF and members of the Black Bombers ahead of their international amateur boxing contest against Metro Detroit Golden Gloves.

Dr Wuaku said the establishment of the fund presented a new opportunity for national athletes to receive support, noting that previous generations of boxers had competed without such a facility.

He added that athletes who excelled while representing Ghana would benefit from the fund and urged the Black Bombers to train diligently and continue winning medals for the country.

“We warmly welcome you, but we are not happy with the recent performances of some national teams, while others are doing their best,” he said.

Dr Wuaku emphasised the importance of boxing to Ghana's sporting heritage, highlighting the country's achievements at the African, Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

He also disclosed that boxing legend Professor Azumah Nelson serves on the board of the Ghana Sports Fund and said his presence would help strengthen support for the sport.

“Boxing is very important to Ghana, and the Sports Fund was instituted to support athletes, including boxers,” he said.

“This is your home. We are mandated to develop sports. You are fortunate now that the fund has been established,” he added.

Dr Wuaku further explained that the fund would engage directly with sports federations rather than individuals, highlighting the importance of institutional collaboration in supporting athletes.

The GBF and Black Bombers delegation was led by veteran boxing consultant Yoofi Boham. Other officials included former GBF president and current International Technical Official George Lamptey, first vice-president Nii Adama Addy and treasurer Mustapha Nettey.

Coaches Vincent Akai Nettey, Elvis Robertson, Benjamin Tetteh and Martey were also part of the delegation.

The boxers present included Ebenezer Ankrah, Henry Malm, Mathias Ashitey, Solomon Sackey, Emmanuel Amui, Ben Bulley, Wahid Omar and Amadu Mohammed.

The team expressed confidence ahead of the contest and pledged to secure victory against their American opponents.

Simon Appiah and other staff of the Ghana Sports Fund were also present at the meeting.

The international amateur boxing contest between the Black Bombers and Metro Detroit Golden Gloves is scheduled for Saturday evening at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
