Ghanaian boxer Seth Gyimah, popularly known as Freezy Macbones, has defeated Nigeria's Godday Appah, nicknamed Zodsolo, to become the new WBO Africa Light Heavyweight champion.
Gyimah secured the title with a points victory over the defending champion on Thursday night in Lagos, bringing an end to Appah's reign.
The highly anticipated contest lived up to its billing, with both boxers producing a fiercely contested bout featuring powerful exchanges and solid action across the rounds.
The WBO Africa Light Heavyweight championship fight, held on 1 October, formed part of Nigeria's Independence Day celebrations in Lagos and was presented by Ezekiel Adamu's Balmoral Group.
Gyimah's victory is particularly significant given his late start in boxing. The 37-year-old only began his professional boxing journey at the age of 27, when many doubted whether he could reach the highest levels of the sport.
Through determination and hard work, however, Gyimah has now captured a major continental title and become one of the oldest fighters to win the WBO Africa Light Heavyweight championship.
"I cannot believe that I have been able to do this in front of the Nigerian fans," Gyimah said after the fight.
He expressed his delight at delivering the victory and returning to Ghana with the title, while thanking his supporters in Kumasi, Accra and abroad for their prayers and encouragement.
Gyimah's achievement was also celebrated by his trainer, Ghana Armed Forces Boxing Team coach and Naval Officer Benard Nartey, who had predicted victory before the bout.
Nartey said he was proud to have played a role in producing a new champion.
The Ghanaian champion has already been presented with another challenge, with a Nigerian boxer calling him out immediately after the contest.
Gyimah accepted the challenge and agreed to return to the ring in December.
In another bout on the same card, Ghana's David Tagoe suffered defeat to Nigeria's Yusuf Adisa Adeniji by unanimous decision.
The eight-round featherweight contest took place at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos, with Adeniji extending his impressive run with a convincing points victory.
