2026/27 GPL Matchday 4 Wrap: Asante Kotoko stunned by 10-man Aduana FC as Karela United leave it late against Hearts of Oak

A dramatic weekend of Ghana Premier League action produced several surprise results as both Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak suffered defeats on Matchday Four of the 2026/27 season.

The round of fixtures, played between Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27, saw the title contenders stumble while other sides took advantage to strengthen their positions in the early standings.

At the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, Hearts of Oak's unbeaten start to the campaign came to an end after a late Mohammed Zaidan strike handed Karela United a hard-fought 1-0 victory. The decisive moment arrived in the 88th minute, with Zaidan finding the breakthrough to secure all three points for the hosts.

The biggest shock of the weekend came at the Baba Yara Stadium, where 10-man Aduana FC stunned Asante Kotoko with a 2-0 victory. Stephen Amankona capitalised on a costly error by goalkeeper Ibrahim Danlad to give the visitors the lead before half-time.

Despite dominating possession after the break, Kotoko failed to convert their chances. Aduana then wrapped up the win deep into stoppage time when Seidu Saana finished off a swift counter-attack.

In Obuasi, FC AshantiGold continued their impressive start to the season with a 2-1 victory over Debibi United at the Len Clay Stadium. Abdul Samed Yakubu opened the scoring for the hosts in the 38th minute, but Clement Nketiah restored parity before the interval. Frederick Twumasi netted the winner in the 61st minute to hand AshantiGold maximum points.

Bechem United also secured a narrow victory, edging Dreams FC 1-0 at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park. Atta Derrick Afriyie's first-half strike proved enough for the Hunters, while Dreams slipped deeper into trouble near the foot of the table.

Berekum Chelsea were denied victory in dramatic fashion after being held to a 1-1 draw by Vision FC at Golden City Park. Seidu Abubakar gave the hosts the lead in the 58th minute, but Ruben Quaye struck in added time to rescue a point for the visitors.

At DUN's Park, newcomers Port City FC continued their impressive debut campaign with a 2-0 victory over Bibiani Gold Stars. First-half goals from Emmanuel Intori and Richard Gyamfi condemned Gold Stars to another disappointing result and prolonged their difficult start to the season.

Defending champions Medeama SC delivered one of the standout performances of the weekend with a commanding 4-1 victory over Basake Holy Stars at TNA Park.

Patrick Ocran gave the visitors an early lead in the 15th minute, but Medeama responded in devastating fashion before the break. Prince Owusu, Emmanuel Annor, Kelvin Nkrumah and Kingsley Braye all found the net in a remarkable first-half turnaround that effectively settled the contest.

Swedru All Blacks and FC Samartex shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at the Swedru Stadium. Salis Mohammed put the hosts ahead after just nine minutes, but Kwaku Owusu equalised shortly after the restart to earn Samartex a point.

Heart of Lions also claimed an important away victory, defeating Young Apostles 2-1 at the Wenchi Stadium. Samuel Prempeh gave the hosts a half-time lead, but Francis Odoom levelled matters in the 50th minute before Mustapha Yakubu struck in the final minute to complete the comeback.

Following the conclusion of Matchday Four, FC Samartex lead the way alongside Hearts of Oak, Port City FC and FC AshantiGold in the top four positions. At the other end of the table, Bibiani Gold Stars, Young Apostles and Dreams FC occupy the relegation places after a challenging start to the campaign.
