The Gambia made a winning start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Somalia at the Independence Stadium on Friday.
Jonathan McKinstry's side took an early lead when Ebrima Colley calmly converted a penalty in the 18th minute after the Scorpions had made the brighter start.
Somalia recovered well from the setback and stayed in the contest before finding an equaliser midway through the second half.
Bilal Elmi Njie struck in the 72nd minute to bring the Ocean Stars level and set up a tense finish, with both teams searching for a decisive goal.
The breakthrough eventually came seven minutes from time as Mohammed Badamosi restored The Gambia's advantage with the winner in the 83rd minute.
The victory gives the Scorpions an important three points in their opening Group C fixture, while Somalia are left searching for a response in their next qualifier.
The Gambia will now travel to Accra to face Ghana on 29 September in their second match of the qualifying campaign, while Somalia will come up against Ivory Coast.
