Danny Jordaan has been re-elected as president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), securing a fourth consecutive term after comfortably defeating challenger Sandile Zungu at the association's elective congress in Midrand on Saturday.

Jordaan polled 157 votes against Zungu's 82, extending his tenure at the helm of South African football.

Voting was conducted by representatives from SAFA's regional structures, associate member associations and the Premier Soccer League (PSL), which participated as a special member.

The result underlined Jordaan's strong support within the organisation despite Zungu attracting significant public backing in the lead-up to the election.

Outside the congress venue at Vodacom World, a vocal group of supporters gathered in support of Zungu, creating an impression that the businessman and football administrator could pose a serious challenge to the incumbent.

Zungu campaigned on a platform of renewal and reform, promising a fresh direction for South African football.

While his campaign largely avoided focusing on controversies that have surrounded Jordaan's administration since he assumed office in 2013, it sought to present an alternative vision for the game's future.

However, Jordaan's camp appeared confident throughout the process, with reports suggesting his "Football Transformation Forum" (FTF) slate had already secured the backing of a majority of SAFA's regions before voting began.

The congress was held under heightened security amid reports of possible disruptions and attempts to prevent proceedings from taking place. SAFA increased security measures for delegates, officials and members of the media attending the event.

Jordaan's position was further strengthened by the absence of four SAFA regions from the congress. Only 48 of the association's 52 regions were represented after the Harry Gwala and Amajuba regions in KwaZulu-Natal, Sarah Baartman in the Eastern Cape and Pixley Ka Seme in the Northern Cape were reportedly disqualified following a National Executive Committee meeting on Friday.

The excluded regions were believed to support the "Zungu for Change" campaign, a development that reduced the challenger's potential voting base.

Alongside the regional delegates, the PSL and selected associate members exercised their voting rights at the congress.

Other bodies, including the South African Masters and Legends Football Association (SAMLFA), remained unable to participate after having their membership and voting rights placed in abeyance.

The outcome ensures Jordaan will continue leading SAFA as he seeks to oversee the next phase of football development in South Africa.
