Han SHS to get boarding status as Mahama inspects GETFund projects in Upper West

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to convert Han Senior High School (SHS) in the Upper West Region from a day institution into a fully-fledged boarding school.

The President made the announcement after inspecting five ongoing Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) projects at the school during his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the region.

He explained that the government was reviewing the implementation of the Community Day Senior High School model to reflect population patterns across the country.

“Our intention now is to apply the community day school concept in high-density population areas, where children can live at home and travel easily to school,” President Mahama said. “In sparsely populated areas, these schools will be converted into boarding institutions.”

President Mahama assured the school’s management that the planned change in status would be supported by the construction of the necessary facilities.

“We will not give you boarding status without building the necessary facilities,” Mahama assured the Headmaster. “We will provide both boys’ and girls’ dormitories. Once contractors complete these projects, the school will be officially redesignated so you can begin admitting boarding students.”

The President said the government would also continue implementing measures to improve secondary education and eliminate the double-track system.

He disclosed that a recently approved $300 million World Bank facility was being used to expand infrastructure in overcrowded senior high schools to allow all students to attend classes at the same time.

In addition, 16 new senior high schools are being constructed under the financing arrangement to help reduce congestion in schools across the country.

“These projects will continue, and we hope that by the end of 2027, no Ghanaian child will still be on the double-track system,” President Mahama added.
