Football people will decide when the time comes — Kurt Okraku refuses to rule out potential third term bid as GFA boss

Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kurt Okraku has declined to rule out seeking a third term in office, saying his focus remains on the work ahead rather than the next election.

Okraku, who has led Ghana football since 2019, will be eligible to stand again in 2027 after the GFA Congress approved a constitutional amendment last year allowing presidents to serve a maximum of three terms.

The proposal was passed overwhelmingly, with 114 of the 124 delegates present voting in favour despite concerns raised by some legal experts.

With the next presidential election still around 18 months away, Okraku said it was too early to decide whether he would seek another mandate.

"I don't know," he told 3Sports when asked about his plans.

"We have close to 18 months before an elective General Assembly. There is a lot of work to be done. I want to concentrate on my tenure as the president and see how best we can reposition our football."

He added: "When the time comes, I will speak. When the time comes, the football family will speak."

Okraku also suggested that his time in office would eventually come to an end, regardless of whether he decides to contest again.

"At the end, I can never stay here forever, and I do not intend to stay here forever. When the time is due, Kurt will fly away," he said.

The former Dreams FC executive was first elected GFA president in 2019 following the work of the Normalisation Committee, which was established after the dissolution of the previous administration.

He secured a second four-year term in 2023 after former GFA vice-president George Afriyie was disqualified from the race, leaving Okraku unopposed.

Although the 2027 election remains some distance away, speculation over potential candidates has already begun. Former Ghana captain Andre Ayew has been linked with a possible bid, while Afriyie is also expected to challenge for the presidency.
