Police arrest suspected armed robber over Accra-Kumasi Highway robberies

The Eastern Regional Police Command, working with the Eastern South Regional Command, has arrested a suspected armed robber in connection with a series of robbery attacks recorded along the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

The suspect, identified as Bube Gariba, was apprehended at Akateng near Asesewa in the Eastern Region on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation.

His arrest followed investigations by the Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Department (PID) into a suspected robbery syndicate believed to have targeted commuters along sections of the Nsawam-Suhum stretch.

The Police said the reported attacks occurred at Kwafokrom, Anoff, Nsawam-Adeiso, Apedwa, Adasawase-Ankaase and Enyiresi, all within the Eastern South Region.

According to the Police, preliminary investigations and interrogation led Gariba to confess to his alleged involvement in three highway robberies near Anyinam.

He reportedly told investigators that he received GH¢5,700 and GH¢1,500 as his share of the proceeds from the robberies.

Gariba also allegedly named Mohammadu, Ali and Abdulai as members of the group and identified a man known as Osmanu, a resident of Accra, as the alleged leader.

The Police said Gariba further disclosed that Osmanu supplied two pump-action guns which were allegedly used by the gang to threaten and rob passengers.

Suspect escapes as wife allegedly obstructs arrest

The Police said one of the alleged accomplices, Mohammadu, managed to escape after his wife allegedly alerted him to the presence of officers and obstructed attempts to arrest him.

His wife, identified as 22-year-old Karia Hawa Isha, was subsequently arrested.

Nine other persons were also picked up at the location and are currently undergoing screening to establish whether they have any links to the reported robbery incidents.

The Police said the suspects in custody were assisting with investigations as efforts continued to unravel the activities of the alleged syndicate.

A manhunt has meanwhile been launched for Mohammadu, Osmanu and other suspected members of the group who remain at large.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to combating violent crime and strengthening security along major highways and within communities.

It has also appealed to members of the public with information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects at large to share it with the Eastern Regional Police Command.
