2026/27 GPL: Hearts of Oak switch home matches to University of Ghana Stadium

Hearts of Oak will play their opening home matches of the 2026-27 Ghana Premier League at the University of Ghana Stadium, after the club confirmed a temporary change of venue because the Accra Sports Stadium is unavailable.

The Phobians announced that the Legon-based stadium will host their Matchday One and Matchday Three fixtures while work continues on the Accra Sports Stadium ahead of Ghana's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia.

The decision follows comments by National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who said there would be no Ghana Premier League matches played at the Accra Sports Stadium until after the Black Stars' September qualifier.

According to the NSA, the stadium's pitch is being preserved to ensure it meets Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards for international matches.

In a statement shared on social media, Hearts of Oak said the temporary move had become necessary because of preparations for the national team's fixture.

"Accra Hearts of Oak SC has made temporary arrangements with the University of Ghana Stadium for the use of the facility for our Matchday One and Matchday Three fixtures," the club said.

It added: "This arrangement has become necessary following the unavailability of the Accra Sports Stadium to facilitate preparations of the pitch for the Black Stars' September AFCON 2027 qualifier against The Gambia.

"We appreciate the understanding and continued support of our cherished supporters."

The Rainbow Boys will begin their 2026-27 league campaign against Berekum Chelsea on Sunday, 6 September, with the University of Ghana Stadium set to serve as their temporary home until the Accra Sports Stadium is reopened for domestic football.
