I'm 100% behind Kwasi Sibo's move to Al-Swehly, says Karim Zito

Ashanti Gold 04 head coach Karim Zito has defended Kwasi Sibo's decision to join Libyan champions Al-Swehly, insisting the Ghana midfielder was right to put his future first despite criticism surrounding the transfer.

Sibo recently completed a reported $10m move to the North African side after leaving Spanish club Real Oviedo, a switch that has divided opinion following his performances for Ghana at the 2026 World Cup in North America.

However, Zito believes the 28-year-old should not be faulted for making a decision he feels is best for his career.

"I'm 100% behind Kwasi Sibo. If you don't fight for yourself now, nobody will fight for you," Zito told 3Sports.

The veteran coach also questioned whether promises made to footballers are always honoured, citing what he described as unfulfilled commitments made to Ghana's players following an Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

"Even when Ghana won the AFCON, they promised to be given houses; it did not come," he said.

"What is the motive of playing football?"

Sibo was a key member of Ghana's squad at the 2026 World Cup, featuring in all four matches and accumulating 249 minutes of action. He started the Black Stars' goalless draw against England and also played against Panama, Croatia and Colombia.

The midfielder is expected to play an important role for Al-Swehly as the Libyan champions begin their CAF Champions League campaign. They are set to face Zanzibar's KVZ in the preliminary round.

It remains uncertain whether Sibo will be named in Ghana's squad for next month's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
