We need to improve our goal-scoring despite Democracy Cup win - Kotoko coach Eric Tinkler

Asante Kotoko head coach Eric Tinkler has urged his players to improve their finishing despite leading the club to victory in the 2026 Democracy Cup.

The Porcupine Warriors secured their second Democracy Cup title after defeating rivals Hearts of Oak 4-1 on penalties following a goalless draw at the Baba Yara Stadium on Friday.

Despite lifting the trophy, Tinkler admitted his side failed to make the most of the numerous opportunities they created during the encounter and stressed that greater efficiency in front of goal will be crucial when the new season begins.

The South African coach praised his team's overall display but acknowledged that Kotoko remain a work in progress.

"I'm proud of the team, but I think we are still a work in progress. We had more than 20 box entries, but we didn't capitalise on them, so we need to work on that. We are creating chances, but we need to put them in the back of the net," Tinkler said.

Kotoko dominated large spells of the contest and created several openings, but were unable to find a breakthrough before eventually prevailing in the penalty shootout.

While the victory offers encouragement ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, Tinkler believes there is still significant room for improvement as he continues to shape his squad.

The Kumasi-based club will now turn their attention to the start of the new Ghana Premier League season, where they are scheduled to face newly promoted Debibi United in their opening fixture on September 6.
