Water supply disrupted in parts of Western Accra after major pipeline damaged

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced a temporary disruption in water supply to several communities in Western Accra following damage to a major transmission pipeline serving the area.

The disruption was caused by the bursting of a 500mm-diameter main pipeline during excavation works being undertaken by AWERCO Construction Ltd.

According to GWL, the excavation forms part of a project to construct underground storm drains along the Kaneshie First Light–Hansonic Junction stretch.

The company said the pipeline was damaged during the works, resulting in a large volume of water flooding the excavation trench and preventing engineers from immediately accessing the affected section to carry out repairs.

In a circular issued on Friday, August 28, GWL management said its engineers and technical teams had been mobilised to the site and were working continuously to resolve the problem.

The teams are currently undertaking dewatering works to remove water that has accumulated in the trench following the pipeline rupture.

GWL said preparatory work on one end of the damaged pipeline had also begun while the dewatering exercise continued.

The company explained that engineers must first gain access to the damaged section before the necessary repairs can be completed and water supply restored to affected communities.

The temporary interruption has affected a number of communities and neighbourhoods across Western Accra.

They include Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman Township and Chorkor, as well as adjoining communities.
