Ghana midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh joins VfL Osnabrück after injury lay-off

Ghana international Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has joined German second-tier side VfL Osnabrück as a free agent as he seeks to revive his career after a lengthy battle with injury.

The 30-year-old attacking midfielder has signed for Osnabrück after spending an extended period on the sidelines following a serious cruciate ligament injury.

Kyereh will be reunited with head coach Timo Schultz, who previously worked with the Ghanaian during their successful spell at FC St. Pauli.

The midfielder enjoyed one of the most productive periods of his career under Schultz, making 62 appearances in the 2. Bundesliga across two seasons and recording 21 goals and 20 assists.

His best campaign came in the 2021/22 season, when he scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists. His performances attracted interest from Bundesliga clubs and eventually earned him a move to SC Freiburg in 2022.

Kyereh went on to feature for Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League before suffering a cruciate ligament injury in February 2023.

His recovery was complicated by further setbacks, keeping him out of competitive football for a prolonged period.

The Ghanaian eventually returned to action this year, making seven appearances for Freiburg's reserve side in the Regionalliga as he worked his way back to full fitness.

Osnabrück had been closely monitoring Kyereh's rehabilitation, with the club's Head of Performance, Sebastian Schwermann, following his physical development and fitness levels.

The German club believes Kyereh can gradually regain his best condition and become an important player for the team. He will wear the number seven shirt at the Bremer Brücke.

Osnabrück technical director Daniel Latkowski also praised the Ghanaian's attacking qualities, highlighting his ability to score goals, create chances and influence matches through his technical ability and understanding of the game.

Schultz is confident Kyereh can rediscover the form that made him a standout performer at St. Pauli.

“From our collaboration, I know what special qualities Kofi possesses as a footballer and as a person. He was an absolute game-changer at St. Pauli,” Schultz said.

Kyereh admitted the past few years have been challenging but insisted he never lost belief in his ability to return to competitive football.

“The past few years have been a very difficult time for me. But I never lost faith in my ability to return to the pitch,” Kyereh said.

The move to Osnabrück represents a fresh opportunity for Kyereh to regain his fitness, consistency and confidence as he looks to rebuild his career and return to his best level.
