I wouldn’t be here without God – Antoine Semenyo opens up on faith, baptism and football journey

Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has opened up about the strong Christian faith that continues to guide his life and football career, revealing that his relationship with God comes before the game.

The talented attacker, who has faith-inspired tattoos across his body, was baptised by a local pastor last December after waiting for the opportunity for a long time due to his demanding football schedule.

Speaking to the BBC, Semenyo explained that the baptism was a significant personal milestone as he continues to deepen his spiritual journey.

"I know that I am obviously walking with God at the moment, and I want to maximise my faith as much as I can, so practising gives me the opportunity to do that," he told the BBC.

"When I got the opportunity, I made sure I took it. I am so happy I have done it and I am in the walk of faith now and it's been amazing."

The Ghana international also revealed that prayer plays an important role in his preparation for matches. Semenyo said he regularly prays before games and joins fellow footballers Jeremy Doku and Marc Guehi in prayer sessions at team hotels before matches.

According to the forward, those moments of faith provide them with “maximum strength” as they prepare to compete at the highest level.

When asked whether he puts his faith ahead of football, Semenyo gave a clear response, insisting that his success is rooted in his belief in God.

"Yeah, 100%. I wouldn't be here without him [God], so there is always going to be faith and football after," he said.

"I think God gave me the talent to be a footballer; he gave me all the skills, he gave me the mindset and the mentality, so I owe it to him to perform and maximise his words to the world."

Semenyo has enjoyed a rise in prominence in recent seasons, becoming an important figure for both club and country.

The Ghana attacker was recently involved in Manchester City’s pre-season defeat to Inter Milan, providing an assist during Saturday's encounter in Enzo Maresca's first game.
