2026 Glasgow: Ghana lose historic Commonwealth Games relay bronze medal after Canada win appeal

Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team have been denied a historic bronze medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after Canada successfully overturned its disqualification following a protest.

The Ghanaian quartet of Joseph Paul Amoah, Ibrahim Fuseini, Barnabas Aggerh and Benjamin Azamati had briefly moved into medal position after Canada, who initially finished second, were disqualified by race officials.

Following the first ruling, Nigeria were promoted to the silver medal position, while Ghana — who finished fourth in the race with an impressive time of 38.13 seconds — were elevated to third place to claim bronze.

The decision appeared to have delivered Ghana its first Commonwealth Games men’s 4x100m relay medal since 1974, ending a 52-year wait for a podium finish in the event.

However, Canada launched an appeal against the disqualification, and officials later upheld the protest, restoring the North American side to second place.

The amended results returned the original medal standings, with Australia keeping the gold medal, Canada reclaiming silver and Nigeria moving back to the bronze medal position.

Ghana consequently dropped to fourth place, narrowly missing out on what would have been a landmark achievement at the Glasgow Games.

Despite the disappointment, the Ghanaian relay team delivered a commendable performance in the final, recording a season-best display against a highly competitive field and reaffirming their status as one of Africa’s strongest sprint relay teams.
