Sedina acquittal: Even the numbering of the charges was wrong – Ivan Kyei

Youth activist Ivan Kyei Innocent has criticised the prosecution’s handling of the Sedina Tamakloe case, arguing that shortcomings in the preparation of the case contributed to the outcome at the Court of Appeal.

He said his assessment of the judgment led him to conclude that the prosecution failed to meet the standard required in a criminal trial.

“Somebody did a poor job,” he said on Joy Prime.

Ivan Kyei Innocent argued that the problems extended beyond the evidence and included the way the charges were prepared.

He noted that although the accused faced several categories of offences, prosecutors drafted dozens of individual charges which, according to him, contained avoidable mistakes.

“An accused person has been charged on almost seven categories of offences. Then you come back to draft almost 78 charges,” he said.

According to him, the Court of Appeal judgment highlighted errors in the charge sheet, including inconsistencies in the numbering of the counts.

“Because people were in haste, even the numbering was wrong and the judge dealt with it. They jumped from 49 to 52,” he stated.

He said the appellate court took time to discuss the issue in its judgment, which, in his view, reflected shortcomings in how the prosecution prepared the case.

“The judge deliberately took his time to discuss that just to give you a notion of the bad job that was done,” Ivan Kyei Innocent said.
