Joseph Paul Amoah misses Commonwealth Games 200m medal after seventh-place finish

Ghanaian sprinter Joseph Paul Amoah was unable to secure a second consecutive Commonwealth Games medal after finishing seventh in the men's 200 metres final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday.

The Team Ghana captain clocked 20.50 seconds in the final, falling short of the podium despite entering the race on the back of an impressive semi-final performance.

Amoah had raised expectations of another medal after posting a season's best time of 20.24 seconds to qualify for the final, where he hoped to build on the bronze medal he claimed at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Reacting after the race, the 28-year-old did not hide his disappointment, admitting he had expected a better result.

"I feel very disappointed. I think I should have done better," Amoah said.

Although satisfied with the lane he was allocated, Amoah pointed to the difficult weather conditions but accepted that his competitors delivered stronger performances when it mattered most.

"I had a good lane. The conditions were not the best, but sometimes we train in conditions like this. The other guys were better today," he added.

Amoah was Ghana's sole finalist in the men's 200 metres after compatriots James Dadzie and Mustapha Bokpin were knocked out in the semi-finals, bringing Team Ghana's campaign in the event to an end without a medal.
