'It will not happen again' — NDC MP apologises for 'I will marry you' comment to school girl

Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Yakubu Mohammed, has issued an unreserved apology following public criticism over comments he made to a primary school pupil during a recent educational visit to Parliament.

The controversy arose after a video of the interaction went viral on social media, showing the MP complimenting the girl's appearance and remarking that he would marry her when she grows up.

Responding to the backlash in an interview with Citi News, Mr. Mohammed admitted that his comments were inappropriate and acknowledged that they had caused discomfort to the child, her family and sections of the public, particularly women.

He expressed deep regret over the incident and offered an apology to the pupil, her family and the Ghanaian public.

"It is something that I am truly sorry for, and I don't think it will happen again. Irrespective of everything, I will be cautious," he said.

The legislator also disclosed that he has initiated steps to reach out to the Member of Parliament for the constituency where the child's school is located to facilitate a visit to personally apologise to the pupil and her family.

Mr. Mohammed said he accepts full responsibility for his actions and assured the public that he would exercise greater caution in future engagements with children.

The incident stems from a viral video in which he is heard telling the pupil:

"You are very beautiful; when you grow up, I will marry you, so she is my wife. In future she will also be an MP," he stated.

The remarks sparked widespread debate on social media, with many users questioning the appropriateness of such comments by public officials during interactions with children and calling for greater sensitivity and professionalism in engagements with minors.
