WAFU B U-20 Championship: Black Satellites fall to Nigeria in thrilling six-goal opener

Ghana's Black Satellites suffered a disappointing start to their 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship campaign after falling 4-2 to defending champions Nigeria in an entertaining Group B encounter at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire, on Monday.

The Flying Eagles made an explosive start to the contest, taking the lead early to put Ghana on the back foot. However, the Black Satellites responded positively, with captain Kelvin Nkrumah leading by example.

The skipper delivered a well-weighted pass to Mohammed Zaidan, who finished clinically to level the score and breathe life back into Ghana's challenge.

Nigeria quickly regained control of the match, restoring their advantage through a deflected effort before extending their lead from the penalty spot.

The defending champions went into the halftime break with a commanding 3-1 advantage after capitalising on Ghana's defensive lapses.

Maxwell Konadu's side emerged for the second half with renewed determination and were rewarded when they won a penalty.

Nkrumah stepped up confidently to convert from the spot, reducing the deficit to 3-2 and giving the Black Satellites renewed hope of mounting a comeback.

Those hopes, however, were dashed in the closing stages when Nigeria were awarded their second penalty of the match. The Flying Eagles made no mistake from 12 yards, restoring their two-goal cushion and securing an impressive 4-2 victory.

Despite the defeat, Ghana showed promising attacking quality throughout the encounter and created several encouraging moments against one of the tournament's strongest sides.

The performance will provide valuable lessons as the team looks to improve in its remaining group matches.

The Black Satellites will now shift their focus to a crucial Group B fixture against Burkina Faso on Thursday before rounding off their group-stage campaign against Togo on Sunday, August 2.

Although Ghana has already secured qualification for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as tournament hosts, the WAFU B U-20 Championship offers an important opportunity for the Black Satellites to continue their development and build momentum ahead of the continental showpiece.
