Ibrahim Mahama not interested neither has he made an attempt at buying VALCO — Aide

Businessman Ibrahim Mahama has denied claims that he is seeking to acquire the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO), describing the allegation as false.

The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU)-Ghana has staged a protest against the alleged sale of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO).

The workers fear that any move to transfer ownership could lead to loss of employment and threaten their livelihoods.

Amid the protests, some social media commentaries have linked the development to the businessman and have been alleging state capture by the John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress administration.

However, in a statement issued on Monday, July 27, Special Aide to Mr. Mahama, Rafik Mahama, dismissed the claims and insisted that the businessman has neither expressed interest in nor made any offer to purchase the state-owned aluminium smelter.

"Mr Ibrahim Mahama has no such interest and has not made any such offer to acquire VALCO," the statement read in part.

The statement described the allegation as part of a series of attempts to tarnish Mr. Mahama's reputation, noting that his business operations have always been conducted within the confines of the law.

It further pointed to the longevity and performance of his companies as evidence of sound corporate governance and integrity.

"All of the business interest of Mr Mahama have been legally commenced or acquired and operate within the ambit of applicable laws. That explains why his businesses have survived for across seven (7) election cycles," it added.

The statement added that Mr. Mahama remains committed to contributing to Ghana's development through legitimate investments and disclosed that he has instructed his lawyers to take the necessary legal action over the publication.
