2026 Commonwealth Games: Amadu Mohammed storms into boxing quarter-finals with first-round stoppage

Ghanaian boxer Amadu Mohammed produced a ruthless performance to secure his place in the quarter-finals of the men's 55kg boxing event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, stopping Kiribati's Eriu Temakau in just one minute and 54 seconds.

The reigning African Games champion wasted no time asserting his dominance, overwhelming his opponent from the opening bell with a series of precise and powerful punches.

Mohammed sent Temakau to the canvas twice in the opening round before the referee halted the contest at the 1:54 mark.

Temakau managed to beat the count after the first knockdown but struggled to cope with Mohammed's relentless pressure. A second heavy knockdown moments later left the referee with little choice but to stop the fight, handing the Ghanaian an emphatic victory.

The impressive win keeps Ghana's hopes of a boxing medal alive at the Games following an early disappointment in the competition.

Earlier, two-time Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Abdul Wahid Omar exited the men's 65kg division after suffering a round-of-32 defeat to England's Patris Mughalzai.

Mohammed travelled to Glasgow as one of Ghana's strongest medal contenders, having captured gold at the 2023 African Games in Accra. His commanding display in the opening bout further underlined his credentials as a genuine title challenger.

With a place in the quarter-finals now secured, the Ghanaian will look to maintain his impressive form as he continues his pursuit of Commonwealth Games glory.
