The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has restated its firm position that no government appointee still in office will be allowed to contest in the party’s upcoming executive elections.
Acting IT Director Jibril Mahdi said the guideline remains unchanged: anyone seeking to run must first resign from their government role — no exceptions, no loopholes.
“Whoever is in office is not qualified to contest our elections,” Mahdi said on Citi News Digest on Saturday, July 25, 2026.
His comments come as the party prepares to elect executives for key national positions, following a directive that appointees must step down before filing nominations.
Mahdi revealed that the party headquarters has not yet received formal resignation letters from most of the individuals rumoured to have resigned, noting that official confirmation will only come during filing and vetting.
“Officially, we have not received any notice from anybody that has resigned. Whatever we are hearing is based on social media information because, at party headquarters, we are not the appointing authority,” he said.
He confirmed, however, that a few resignations have been verified — including the Eastern Regional Chairman, the Regional Communication Officer, and Leland Tay, who is contesting for the national chairman position.
The NDC’s stance could derail the ambitions of several government officials who may have hoped to contest while holding onto their public appointments.
Mahdi dismissed any suggestion of special exemptions.
“For now, whoever is still in office is automatically ineligible to contest as it stands,” he stressed.
The party is expected to move to the next phase of its internal electoral calendar after completing branch-level elections, with systems being prepared for the upcoming contests.
