The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, has renewed calls for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to account for his stewardship, insisting that public trust in governance hinges on holding former officials accountable regardless of political colours.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, July 25, Mr Amoah urged Ghanaians to interrogate national budgets and demand explanations from those who managed the country’s finances.
He warned that unresolved controversies surrounding Ofori-Atta’s tenure could become a major political liability for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as it seeks to return to power in the 2028 general election.
“If you are an NPP person, you should be worried anytime that this debacle continues to extend. Because, again, if you ask me to come 2028 to give you a mandate, are you bringing me a different finance minister or the same kind of crookish thing that was done?” he said.
Mr Amoah argued that Ofori-Atta owes Ghanaians a full account of decisions taken during his time in office.
“The man should come and account to us. Look, he might be able to even help us find certain money that he didn’t pick, right? But under his stewardship, this is what you will see.”
He stressed that his comments were rooted in the principle of accountability, not partisan politics, adding that every national budget must be subjected to rigorous public scrutiny.
His remarks come as Ofori-Atta remains in the United States while facing corruption-related proceedings initiated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The OSP has filed multiple corruption and corruption-related charges against the former minister and, through the Attorney General, is pursuing his extradition to Ghana. The case stems from investigations into the Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) contracts, the National Cathedral project, and other matters.
Meanwhile, a US court has granted Ofori-Atta permanent residency, ruling that the OSP failed to prove wrongdoing in its filings.
