Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has praised WBO Africa and IBF Africa Featherweight champion John Abaja Laryea for his dedication, discipline and commitment as the boxer prepares for a major step in his professional career.
Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup and an ambassador for the country’s national football teams, visited the Bronx Boxing Gym at Jamestown in Accra on Tuesday to observe Laryea’s training session ahead of his upcoming bout against Argentine boxer Adrian Robledo Maximiliano.
The highly anticipated fight, scheduled for August 15, 2025, will serve as a WBA Featherweight eliminator and represents a significant opportunity for Laryea, popularly known as the ‘Expensive Boxer’, to move closer to securing a shot at a world title.
Speaking after watching the training session, Gyan expressed his admiration for Laryea’s approach to boxing, describing him as a focused athlete who listens to instructions and works hard to improve.
“I love John Laryea because he is a very serious boxer. He listens to instructions and implements them,” Gyan said.
The former Black Stars skipper also commended the young boxer’s dedication and urged him to remain focused as he pursues his dream of becoming a world champion.
Laryea, who is trained by renowned coach Carl Lokko, continues his preparations alongside other boxers at the Bronx Boxing Gym, including Daniel Gorsh, Abu Tilapia Kamoko, Emmanuel Quartey and several others.
Gyan was accompanied during the visit by his senior brother Baffour and Samuel Anim Addo, the CEO of Bronx Boxing Promotions and manager of Laryea.
The upcoming clash with Maximiliano is expected to be one of the biggest tests of Laryea’s career, with victory potentially opening the door to a world title opportunity.
