GFA must retain Carlos Queiroz as Black Stars coach – Dr Nyaho Tamakloe

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has called on the football governing body to keep Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, insisting the Portuguese tactician deserves time to rebuild the national team.

Queiroz was appointed Ghana’s head coach in March following the dismissal of Otto Addo, taking charge of the team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Although Ghana’s World Cup campaign ended after elimination in the knockout stage, the 73-year-old guided the Black Stars to reach the knockout phase for the first time since 2010. His future, however, has become a subject of debate after a social media post appeared to suggest he was stepping away from the role.

The former Real Madrid manager has since clarified that he has not resigned, but discussions remain ongoing over whether he should continue as Ghana’s head coach.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe backed Queiroz to remain in charge, arguing that continuity on the technical bench is crucial for the country’s football revival.

"I feel we should maintain him for a limited period," he said, explaining that the coach should initially be offered a short-term contract, with any extension based on his performance.

The Hearts of Oak board member believes Queiroz’s responsibility should extend beyond preparing the Black Stars for immediate competitions, insisting that the coach must focus on building a strong team for the future.

"He should be made to know that he is going to train the boys from the scratch and make them very formidable," he stated.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe also raised concerns about the physical condition of some members of the current squad, blaming inconsistent training regimes for some of the team’s difficulties.

He urged the technical team to prioritise improving players’ fitness levels while scouting and developing young talents capable of strengthening the national team in the long term.

According to the former GFA president, restoring Ghana’s status in international football will require patience, strategic planning and greater investment in youth development, including providing more opportunities for home-based players.

He remains optimistic that with the right structures and support, the Black Stars can return to competing at the highest level.

Following the conclusion of the World Cup campaign, Ghana will now shift focus to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where they have been drawn in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia and The Gambia. The qualifying matches are scheduled to begin in September.
