Carlos Queiroz is on the verge of extending his tenure as head coach of the Black Stars after receiving strong backing from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
The experienced Portuguese trainer, who was appointed on a short-term contract ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is expected to sign a new two-year deal in the coming days as Ghana looks to continue with the rebuilding process under his leadership.
The decision comes after a joint review of the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign, with both the GFA and the Sports Ministry impressed by the progress made under Queiroz despite the team’s elimination at the Round of 32 stage.
Although Ghana fell short of advancing further at the global showpiece, football authorities believe the 73-year-old has introduced greater discipline, tactical structure and a clear identity to the team during his brief spell in charge.
Under the proposed agreement, Queiroz’s first major assignment will be guiding Ghana through the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Black Stars have been drawn against Ivory Coast, Gambia and Somalia.
Beyond securing qualification, the former Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Colombia, Qatar and South Africa coach will be tasked with helping Ghana end its long wait for continental success, with the country’s last AFCON triumph coming in 1982.
Queiroz’s approach and experience at both club and international level have convinced Ghana’s football authorities that maintaining continuity is the best option as the Black Stars embark on a new chapter.
If the agreement is completed, the veteran coach will immediately begin preparations for the AFCON qualifying campaign while overseeing the long-term development and rebuilding of the national team.
An official announcement is expected soon, with the GFA and the Sports Ministry hopeful that Queiroz can lead Ghana back to the top of African football and help deliver another major trophy for the four-time African champions.
