Marvin Senaya undergoes successful surgery after World Cup injury, faces eight-week layoff

Ghana international Marvin Senaya is set for a spell on the sidelines after undergoing successful surgery to treat the hamstring injury he sustained during the Black Stars' 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The 26-year-old right-back picked up the injury in Ghana's Round of 32 encounter against Colombia at the Kansas City Stadium on Friday, July 3, forcing him to cut short his involvement in the tournament.

Medical examinations carried out in Kansas City, including an MRI scan, confirmed that Senaya had suffered a significant hamstring injury, necessitating surgical intervention.

The operation was successfully performed in Paris, after which the defender returned to his club, AJ Auxerre, where he will continue his recovery and rehabilitation programme under the club's medical team.

Senaya is expected to be sidelined for at least eight weeks, dealing a temporary blow to both club and country following an impressive World Cup campaign.

The France-based defender featured in all four of Ghana's matches at the tournament before his injury against Colombia. His consistent performances made him one of the Black Stars' standout performers during their run.

Despite the setback, there is optimism that Senaya will recover in time to be available for Ghana's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin later this year.

His return would provide a timely boost for the Black Stars as they resume their quest for continental success.
