Former Ghana international striker Majeed Waris has attributed the ongoing challenges in Ghana football to the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), insisting the problems go beyond the players on the pitch.
Waris’ comments follow the Black Stars’ elimination from the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their Round of 32 encounter.
Ghana’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament were ended after Jhon Arias scored the only goal of the match in the first half, bringing the team’s campaign to a disappointing conclusion.
The Black Stars’ technical situation has also come under scrutiny following the appointment of Carlos Queiroz on a short-term basis after the dismissal of Otto Addo.
The Portuguese coach has since suggested that he may not continue with the project, stressing the need for a better working environment for the team to succeed.
Speaking on Joy Prime, Waris argued that the difficulties surrounding Ghana football should not be blamed on the players but rather those responsible for managing the sport.
"Carlos Queiroz has been with the Black Stars for just four months, and he delivered such a heavy statement," he said.
"It’s not about players; it’s about who is in charge," Waris added.
Despite their early exit, Ghana’s World Cup campaign represented a positive step, with the Black Stars reaching the knockout stage of the competition for the first time since their famous run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
The four-time African champions will now shift their focus towards rebuilding the team and preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as they seek to return to the top level of African football.
