Ghana Premier League side Heart of Lions have appointed Turkish tactician Kasim Gokyildiz as their new head coach ahead of the 2026/27 domestic top-flight campaign.

The experienced trainer has signed a one-year contract with the Kpando-based club, with an option for an extension, as he returns to Ghana to take charge of the Lions.

Gokyildiz replaces veteran Ghanaian coach Bashir Hayford, whose three-year spell at the club came to an end following the expiration of his contract.

Heart of Lions confirmed the appointment of the Turkish coach through their official social media platforms, expressing their excitement about the arrival of the new manager.

“We are delighted to officially announce the appointment of Kasim Gokyildiz as the Club’s new Head Coach.

“Coach Kasim signs a one-year deal with renewal options. Woezor coach Kassim to the Lions Den,” the club posted.

The club also announced the departure of Hayford, thanking the experienced Ghanaian coach for his contribution during his time in charge.

“Heart of Lions Football Club announces that Head Coach Bashir Hayford has departed the club after the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to his time with the team,” the club stated.

“Coach Hayford served the club with dedication, professionalism, and commitment throughout his tenure. His experience, leadership, and passion for the game played an important role in the club’s journey, and we sincerely appreciate his contribution both on and off the pitch.”

Gokyildiz arrives with considerable experience in Ghanaian football, having previously managed clubs including King Faisal, Bechem United, and Hohoe United.

His appointment comes after Heart of Lions endured a challenging 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season. The club started strongly, recording just one draw in their opening eight matches, but struggled as the campaign progressed.

The Kpando side eventually finished 14th on the league table with 45 points, narrowly avoiding relegation by just two points.

The club will now hope Gokyildiz can bring stability and guide them towards a stronger performance in the upcoming season.
