The U.S. national team came into this World Cup with every conceivable home advantage. The Americans enjoyed automatic qualification and a gentle group as co-hosts.
They encountered raucous, star-spangled crowds wherever they went. And, when necessary, they could count on a game-changing assist from the Oval Office.
It was a flat and uninspired performance for the USMNT, which had been outstanding for much of the World Cup on home soil.
Charles De Ketelaere gave Belgium the lead just nine minutes in, capping off a dreadful start for the U.S.
Malik Tillman equalised in the 31st minute off a deflected free kick, but De Ketelaere headed home just two minutes later to restore Belgium’s lead.
In the 57th minute, disaster struck for the USMNT. Matt Freese took too long on a ball outside his box and was dispossessed, with Hans Vanaken scoring into an open goal and Tim Ream unable to prevent the goal. Romelu Lukaku added gloss to the result in second-half stoppage time.
