During his 99th appearance for his country on 16 June, Mbappé scored twice against Senegal to equal and then eclipse Olivier Giroud's feats as France's record goalscorer.

Mbappé took his tally to 59 in the 15th minute of France's second game in Group I.

The 27-year-old picked up a pass from Michael Olise on the right hand side of the Iraq penalty area and powered a left-footed shot past the Iraq goalkeeper Ahmed Basil.

Thunder storms delay game for two hours

Goal number 60 - his fourth of the 2026 tournament - came in the second half which followed a two-hour break due to the storm.

Spectators at Lincoln Field were ordered to evacuate the stands to wait for the lightning to pass as players remained in the changing rooms.

Ousmane Dembélé scored in the 66th minute to complete a comfortable outing for Didier Deschamps men who are among the favourites to lift the World Cup trophy on 19 July.

Mbappé's pyrotechnics took him to 16 goals during three World Cup tournaments.

France, who have six points, play their final game of the pool stages against Norway on Friday in Boston.

"It was a very important victory. It was a tough match, and one we've worked hard for. It gives us peace of mind going forward."
