2026 World Cup: Ibrahim Tanko makes strong case for Medeama players in Black Stars squad after GPL triumph

Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko has called for greater recognition of his players at the national team level, insisting several members of his championship-winning squad deserve a place in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup plans.

Tanko, who led the Yellow and Mauve to a dominant Ghana Premier League title defence, believes the club’s recent success should translate into opportunities for home-based players in the Black Stars setup.

Medeama sealed their second consecutive league crown with a game to spare, finishing the campaign with 17 wins and just five defeats in an impressive run that underlined their consistency and depth.

Speaking to Nhyria FM, the former Ghana international said at least four of his players have shown enough quality to earn national team consideration.

“I expect our players to be in the team. We have produced at least four players for the national team — Mamadu Kamaradini, Prince Owusu, Kelvin Nkrumah and Salim Adams,” Tanko said.

Tanko reserved special praise for midfielder Salim Adams, who has scored 12 goals in 28 appearances, and strongly backed him for individual honours.

“Salim Adams deserves the Player of the Season award. If you look at the performance, every coach in Ghana can testify that there is no doubt he is outstanding,” he added.

He also highlighted his long-standing relationship with the midfielder, tracing his development from youth international level and crediting his growth in attitude and professionalism.

“I have known him since his time in the U-17 national team. He is my relative, and I have also taken him to U-23 tournaments, so I know his abilities and when to push him to the best. We know his strength, power and pace. He listened to our advice and changed his attitude,” Tanko explained.

Medeama will conclude their campaign on Sunday with a final fixture against Hearts of Oak.
