Former Black Stars winger Laryea Kingston has dismissed reports alleging he became physical after being excluded from Ghana’s squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Kingston, who had also missed out on Ghana’s squad for the 2006 World Cup, was again left out of the final team for the tournament in South Africa despite being a key figure for the national side.
Speaking to 3Sports, the former Ghana international reflected on the painful experience that ended his dream of playing at the global showpiece, stressing that accounts of his reaction had been distorted.
“I did not take the decision lightly. I was very emotional and spoke strongly because I was hurt by the situation. But the claims that I became physical are completely false. That part of the story has never been true,” he explained.
Although Kingston was omitted from the squad, the 2010 FIFA World Cup remains Ghana’s most successful campaign at the tournament, with the Black Stars reaching the quarterfinals in South Africa.
