Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to put aside internal disagreements and work collectively towards rebuilding the party ahead of the 2028 general election.
He cautioned party members against engaging in activities that could undermine the newly elected national leadership, stressing that the internal contest had ended and the focus must now shift to the party’s broader political objective.
Mr Afenyo-Markin made the call in a Facebook post following the NPP’s 2026 National Delegates Conference held in Kumasi last Saturday.
“Nobody should leave Kumasi to work against the NPP. The internal contest is over. The greater work begins,” he wrote, while calling for the 2028 campaign to begin immediately.
The Minority Leader said the NPP must now rally behind its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and build a united campaign capable of returning the party to power.
He also accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to meet the expectations of Ghanaians, saying the NPP must communicate the government’s shortcomings to the electorate while presenting credible alternatives.
Mr Afenyo-Markin urged party leaders and communicators to engage Ghanaians with humility and make the case for Dr Bawumia as the candidate capable of leading the country.
“In our view, the NDC Government has lost sight of the fundamental purpose of government: to improve lives, protect freedoms, uphold the rule of law, create opportunity, and exercise public power with competence, fairness and accountability.
“Our responsibility is not merely to criticise. We must earn the trust of Ghanaians again. We must return to every community, listen before we speak, organise, prepare credible solutions, hold the Government to account with facts and courage, and keep faith.
“Our watchwords must be humility, unity and hard work. Let the quarrels end here. Let the work begin here. We fell together, and we have learned together. Now we must rise together with renewed hope, humility, discipline and hard work,” he stated.
According to him, every member of the NPP has a role to play in projecting Dr Bawumia and securing victory for the party in the next presidential election.
“Our task is clear: put our visionary and tireless flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the Jubilee House as President in January 2029, with a strong NPP parliamentary majority to work alongside him in transforming Ghana, unlocking our country's true potential and empowering every citizen to realize theirs,” he pointed out.
Mr Afenyo-Markin also congratulated the newly elected national officers and reminded them that their victory came with responsibilities rather than privileges.
“You have won a duty, not a trophy,” he told the new executives, while also assuring unsuccessful candidates that their contribution to the party remained important.
“To those who did not prevail: the party still needs you,” he added.
