Ghana’s Black Starlets were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Algeria in their opening match of the ongoing U-17 Africa Cup of Nations at the Mohammed VI Football Academy.
The Starlets made a flying start, taking the lead as early as the 3rd minute through Gavi Yao, who capitalised on a goalkeeping error.
Eric Gyamfi then doubled the advantage in the 10th minute with a superb long-range chipped effort to put Ghana firmly in control at the break.
However, the game turned after halftime as Algeria came out with renewed intensity. Adam Benali reduced the deficit in the 57th minute, finishing off a move set up by Mahdi Maghlout before Zaidi completed the comeback just three minutes later to restore parity at 2-2.
Algeria had the chance to complete the turnaround in the 67th minute after being awarded a penalty, but Ilyas Grini failed to convert, firing over the crossbar.
Both sides pushed for a late winner in an entertaining final phase, but neither could find the decisive goal.
The result leaves Ghana and Algeria level on one point apiece in Group D after a fiercely contested opener.
The Black Starlets now turn their attention to their next group fixture against Senegal on Sunday, May 17.
