Black Starlets head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has called on his players to draw strength from Ghana’s proud youth football history as the team prepares for the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Ghana have been drawn in Group D alongside Algeria, Senegal and South Africa in what is expected to be a highly competitive section of the tournament.
Speaking to CAFOnline, Ogum highlighted the significance of Ghana’s reputation at junior level, stressing both the responsibility and opportunity that come with wearing the national jersey.
"It is very important because Ghana has always been recognised as one of the strongest nations in youth football," he said.
He noted that the current squad has a chance to build on past achievements while creating its own identity on the continental stage.
"The Black Starlets have created great memories in the past, and this current generation has an opportunity to write its own chapter in history."
Ogum, however, was quick to caution against allowing history to become a burden, insisting the focus must remain on development, confidence and performance.
"We constantly remind the players about the legacy they are carrying, but at the same time, we encourage them to focus on creating their own identity and success story."
The Black Starlets begin their campaign against Algeria tonight at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT.
Ghana head into the tournament hoping to reaffirm their status as one of Africa’s leading youth sides, with expectations high but carefully managed within the camp.
