Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei has stressed that Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico goes beyond routine preparation, describing it as a key opportunity to assess the team’s depth, character and future direction.

Ghana will face Mexico on May 22 as part of their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“This match represents more than just a game for us. It is an opportunity for these players to demonstrate the level of talent, character, discipline, and potential that exists within Ghanaian football,” Ofei told Flashscore.

He added that the technical team is committed to rewarding consistency and the right attitude.

“We believe strongly in creating opportunities for players who are performing consistently and showing the right mentality.”

Head coach Carlos Queiroz has named a 23-man squad for the fixture, which includes 15 debutants and six home-based players.

The selection is seen as part of a broader effort to test emerging talent ahead of major international commitments.

The friendly against Mexico is expected to give several young and locally based players valuable exposure at the highest level, as Ghana sharpen preparations for the World Cup and other upcoming assignments.

After the Mexico clash, the Black Stars will take on Wales on June 2 in their final preparatory match before heading to the global tournament.
