2026 World Cup: Government will not fund the trips of GFA’s Executive Council members – Kofi Adams

Minister of Sports and Recreation Kofi Adams has outlined the government’s position on travel arrangements for Ghana Football Association (GFA) officials ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, confirming that Executive Council members will not have their trips financed by the state.

Speaking to Asempa FM, he explained that while the government will support key administrative figures, the same arrangement will not extend to all GFA Executive Council members.

“The government will not fund the travel of Executive Council members of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) ahead of the World Cup," he said.

The Buem MP added that support will instead be focused on top officials and technical leadership within the association.

“However, the General Secretary [Prosper Harrison Addo], the president of the GFA [Kurt Okraku], and Management Committee members will be taken care of, but the government will not fund the trips of any Executive Council members because you cannot head into the tournament, especially the president of the GFA," he noted.

Adams stressed that the decision is intended to streamline expenditure ahead of the tournament, especially for non-essential travel.

Ghana, four-time African champions, have been drawn in Group L for their fifth World Cup appearance, where they will face England, Croatia, and Panama.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23, and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Ahead of the tournament, Carlos Queiroz’s side will step up preparations with international friendlies against Mexico later this month and Wales on June 2.
