Former Ghana international Kwadwo Asamoah has voiced concerns about the current Black Stars squad, warning that the team may lack the quality needed to compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the global tournament this summer, having been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. The Black Stars are aiming to improve on disappointing group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.
With head coach Carlos Queiroz expected to name his final squad on June 1, Asamoah believes the team faces a difficult challenge against elite opposition.
“All these players that we are going to meet at the World Cup, the majority of them are playing in the Champions League, playing for bigger clubs, so to play countries like that during the World Cup won't be easy," Asamoah told 3Sports.
He also singled out England as a major threat, praising their recent progress and style of play under their current setup.
"England has been good in the past few years, having the new coach with them. They are playing very good football," he added.
Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before taking on England on June 23. Their group-stage run will conclude against Croatia on June 27.
Ahead of the tournament, Queiroz’s side will fine-tune preparations with international friendlies against Mexico later this month and Wales on June 2.
