MON, 20 APR 2026

Newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz is set to arrive in Ghana with five members of his backroom staff ahead of his official unveiling.

The 73-year-old has been handed a short-term contract to lead the four-time African champions into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, replacing Otto Addo, who was dismissed following back-to-back friendly defeats against Austria and Germany last month. Addo had earlier secured Ghana’s qualification for the tournament.

Queiroz, a former Real Madrid and Portugal manager, will bring his trusted technical team as part of a broader restructuring of the national team setup.

In preparation for their arrival, the Ghana Football Association has begun adjustments within its technical ranks.

Technical advisor and Director of Football Winfried Schäfer has been relieved of his duties, while high-performance coach John Paintsil has also been dismissed. Other existing staff members are expected to make way for the new technical direction.

However, the veteran trainer is expected to arrive in the country this week for his official unveiling. Following his unveiling this week, the GFA will formally introduce the Portuguese tactician to Sports Minister Kofi Adams as part of official protocol.

The new head coach is expected to immediately take charge of Ghana’s build-up matches against Mexico and Wales on June 2, ahead of the World Cup.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L for the tournament, where they will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz brings a wealth of World Cup experience, having previously led South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, guided Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 editions.

His appointment is expected to stabilise the Black Stars and improve their fortunes after early exits in 2014 and 2022.
