Veteran Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz has been named head coach of the Black Stars, on a short-term contract leading up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment was confirmed by the Ghana Football Association, with Queiroz taking over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed in March following consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany.

The decision, endorsed by the GFA Executive Council after consultations with key stakeholders, brings closure to weeks of uncertainty surrounding the team’s technical leadership.

Queiroz arrives with a wealth of experience at both club and international levels, having previously handled top sides such as Real Madrid and Manchester United. On the international stage, he has coached Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Oman, Japan and Qatar.

His pedigree on football’s biggest stage is a key factor behind his appointment. The 73-year-old guided Portugal to the Round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup and led Iran in the 2014 and 2018 editions. He also played a significant role in South Africa’s qualification for the 2002 tournament.

Queiroz takes charge at a crucial period, with preparations intensifying ahead of the global showpiece. He is expected to immediately begin assessing the squad, assembling his technical team and shaping Ghana’s strategy for the tournament.

He will meet the players next month when the Black Stars regroup for an international friendly against Mexico, followed by another preparatory match against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, preparing for its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After underwhelming outings at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, Queiroz will be tasked with steering Ghana to a stronger showing on the global stage.

My question is.... Is the new coach going to scout for a new set of a team or he's going to use those that Otto has already selected? Waste of time and money. We might not go past the group stage because this new coach.

Just in....
